Week 5- Glossary Words

For tonight each person in our group needs to find 2 vocabulary words they deem essential for preservice/new teachers to know/understand.  You need to find one of your words from  Kucer’s book and the other from ch. 3 or 4 in S&H depending on which topic you are summarizing for this week.  Please note the definition should not be a text book definition or a lengthy one.  Keeping it simply and brief will help teachers develop a clear understanding.  Once the definitions have been posted, please go back and give suggestions for changes to others words if necessary.  Please do this by Monday night (tonight) so there is time to edit!

  1. Kucer word:
    Language variation-Language variation refers to the non "norm" versions of a language. Language Variations have their own consistent rules and patterns that match the groups that use them.

    Chapter 4 S&H word:
    Dialogic reading- a method in which students and teachers read books aloud together and talk about the book is encouraged in order to foster language development through conversations about the context of the book.

    2. For lang. variation, maybe mention dialects (African American English) and/or ELLs.

    3. A dialect is an example of language variation. For example, African American English follows its own select rules and patterns, i.e. tenses:not using ed, and different vowel sounds: r-colored vowels, and diphthongs.

  2. Kucer Ch. 4
    code-switching: the ability to switch between two languages or dialects according to what is appropriate in a situation. ELL students and speakers of non-standard English do this frequently. Ex: the way you talk to a professor versus the way you would text your best friend.

    S&H Ch. 3
    multidimensional vocabulary program: the use of various methods and strategies, to highlight certain aspects of a target word. and teach its meaning. The end result is students know the target word well enough to use it new contexts of their own.

    Multimodality of texts – This phrase refers to all kinds text, whether linguistic or nonlinguistic. Text can include anything that has meaning, from letters to words to pictures to embedded hyperlinks. Text no longer is restricted to just print. With the advent of computer technology and the Internet, sound, video, instant messages, chat room conversations, and blogs are all modes of text. Teachers must be aware of this change in language development so they can effectively instruct students in literacy.



    Silverman & Hartranft

    Explicit instruction - This is an intentional style of teaching that emphasizes sustained teaching of vocabulary over time. The teacher defines a word, gives examples of it, uses it often, and encourages students to use the words as well. Vocabulary words are presented before, during, and after reading, and are used repeatedly and in different ways. This is a way of reinforcing vocabulary development.

  4. I'm sharing what I have so far for the characteristics/theory portion of teaching vocabulary instruction with you on Google docs. I didn't go into the 6 principles for effective vocabulary instruction (see S&H graphic pg. 38). I know Kaitin, Megan, and Courtney would cover the principle of language-rich environments and the other groups would cover the principles of vocabulary assessment and independent word learning. I mainly focused on explicit and extended instruction. Let me know what you think! Do I need to include info about the remaining two principles: using multimedia to support word learning and fostering home-school connections for word learning?

    1. OK, I'll take a look. Did you read Dr. Beach's email? She mentioned Kucer as well --- like that should be included in our summary. I'm working on my part now. You might mention those last two things --- just to be complete.

    2. I will add something about Home-School Connection and Multimedia before tomorrow night to my summary.

      We have to have 5 words from Kucer, but I don't think we have to use Kucer for our summary unless it directly applies to teaching vocabulary. I'll skim the end of Ch. 2 where it talks about academic vocabulary to see if there is anything we want to add.

  5. Kucer (p. 289-290)
    constructivism: building an understanding of language and how it works through the use of prior experiences, interactions, and an individuals own ideas. There are three different types of constructivism - linguistic, cognitive, sociocultural, and developmental. This is a theory originally proposed by Jean Piaget.

    Should I expand on the different types? I can! I don't know how long the definitions should be. Thanks ladies!

    S&H Chapter 4
    Language Experience Approach (LEA) - Teachers encourage development of literacy skills (listening, reading, writing) through conversations in the classroom and questioning to extend knowledge. LEA is meant to create a natural bridge between spoken and written language, according to Roach Van Allen, who is an well-known advocate for this approach.

  6. Language (Kucer ch. 2): The way in which people communicate with one another through reading, writing, and speaking. Language is rule governed, creative, and generative system.

    Expressive and Receptive Language skills (Kucer): Expressive language is what we hear and understand. Expressive language is what we say to others.

    I know the expressive and receptive language is two vocab. words, but I thought they were short and needed to be together. I only remember expressive language being mentioned, but again I think it's important to include receptive. Thoughts?

  10. okay I have compiled all the summaries into the google doc! Please take a look! I apologize if the format changed that you'd originally used, but I was trying to make it look cohesive! I also made a google doc with all the words in it! I've given everyone access so please check and make sure it's the word and definition that we all agreed on. If not please make changes! Everyone has access to it all so if there is a grammatical error please change it!
